MRI technologists help patients into MRI scanners and use magnetic resonance imaging to produce detailed images of the inside of the body to be used to make diagnoses. The majority of techs work in hospitals, though some also work in laboratories or physician offices. It should take a little over two years to become an MRI technologist after graduating high school. Read on to learn about how to become an MRI tech from the end of high school to licensure—and jobs available after.
How to get an associates degree
To become an MRI tech, you need to start by getting an associate degree. Ideally, this should be in a field such as physics, biology, or anatomy. Some schools will also offer an associate’s degree in a field such as radiology, or MRI training. While these programs help students build background knowledge and prepare them from an MRI technologist program, they are not essential.
How to complete an MRI Technologist Program
Your next step is to complete an MRI technologist program. Check out the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists’ list of accredited MRI technologist schools. Many schools offer online programs, but its important to look for ones that offer clinical experience such as clinical labs, along with internship experience—clinical experience both helps you build skills and is great to add to a resume.
How to get certified as an MRI tech
Although certification is usually not required by state law to work as an MRI tech, most employers will require it. You can get certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). While the ARRT does not endorse any specific exam study materials, they provide the exam specification, so students can know what they need to study. They have one available through January 31, 2025, and a different spec for students taking the exam after February 1, 2025.
How to get an MRI tech state license
Over 75% of states require a state license to work as an MRI technologist, according to the ARRT. Some of these states use ARRT exam scores or certification to determine state licensure. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists provides a guide to licensure requirements by state.
